Eight rules before you pay

  1. 1If you did not start the conversation, do not send money from it.
  2. 2Leave their text, email, or call. Use a number or website you already trust.
  3. 3No bank, police department, court, or utility takes payment by gift card, cryptocurrency, or a courier.
  4. 4A bank will never ask you to move your money to protect it.
  5. 5Do not share a password, a one-time code, or a recovery phrase.
  6. 6Do not tap an unexpected link or scan a QR code you did not expect.
  7. 7A voice that sounds like family is not proof. Hang up and call the number saved in your phone.
  8. 8Anyone who offers to recover your money for a fee is a second scam.
